Can Natural Remedies Improve ADHD?
Aug 26, 2022
As many as 9.4% of children and adolescents ages 2 to 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition that can lead to abnormal levels of hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors. People with ADHD may also have difficulty concentrating on a task or sitting still for long periods of time. Many people have inattention and changes in energy levels. People with ADHD occur more frequently and to a greater extent than people without it. It can have a major impact on their study, work, and family life.
Studies have shown that natural supplements can provide a variety of health benefits for people with ADHD, such as improved brain function, increased attention span, enhanced focus, mood regulation, improved sleep quality, and improved memory. Here are 3 of the beneficial natural ADHD supplements, Pine Bark Extract 95% OPC, Rhodiola Rosea Extract Powder, and Vegan DHA, along with research results for each that show whether adding them to the treatment plan can unlock better attention, focus, and concentration.

★ Pine Bark Extract 95% OPC: Pine bark extract powder contains health-promoting compounds called proanthocyanidins. In a 2006 study, researchers provided 61 children with ADHD with either 1 mg of pine bark extract or a placebo daily for four weeks. Findings showed that pine bark extracts reduced hyperactivity and improved attention and focus. The placebo showed no benefit. Another study found that providing the extract within 1 month helped to normalize antioxidant levels in children with ADHD. A study published in 2007 showed that pine bark extract reduced stress hormones by 26%. Eventually, a 2021 study involving 20 children with ADHD found that supplementation with pine bark extracts substantially reduced inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
★ Rhodiola Rosea Extract Powder: It is made from the plant that grows in the Arctic, and can ameliorate alertness, attention, and accuracy. It can be overly stimulating for younger children and is sometimes beneficial for children ages 8 to 12. It is most useful for middle school, high school, and college students who must complete long essays and spend hours reading.
★ Vegan DHA: Studies have shown that people with ADHD have lower levels of omega-3s compared to people without ADHD. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is a kind of omega-3 fatty acid. The benefits of taking DHA supplements may include improving ADHD symptoms, such as improved focus, concentration, and memory.

Let's take a closer look at what causes ADHD. Research has shown that a decrease in dopamine is a factor in ADHD. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that helps to transfer signals from one nerve to another. It plays an important role in triggering emotional responses and actions. Other studies have shown structural differences in the brain. The findings showed that people with ADHD had smaller gray matter volumes. Gray matter includes areas of the brain that contribute to speech, self-control, decision-making, and muscle control.
