Do Herbal Extracts Work For Neurodegenerative Diseases?

Aug 18, 2022

Neurodegenerative diseases affect millions of people all around the world. Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease are the most common neurodegenerative diseases. These conditions are usually caused by age, but not always. Several studies suggest that these diseases have become more common recently, partly due to an increase in the global elderly population. Neurodegenerative diseases include diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Neurodegenerative diseases are progressive, which means they get worse over time. Certain studies have shown that some herbal extracts may improve cognition and help treat neurodegenerative diseases, such as Ashwagandha Root Extract Powder, Asiaticoside Powder, Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Turmeric Extract Powder, and more.

Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases share many common symptoms. The more severe the symptoms of these diseases, the longer you will be sick. Some of these include more prolonged time to learn new skills, memory loss, impaired mental function, loss of muscle control, disorientation, hallucinations, delusions, depression, affective blunting, social withdrawal, and more.

Here are some herbal extracts that scientific research has found to benefit the brain:

★ Ashwagandha Root Extract Powder: According to a review study in 2010, preliminary research found that ashwagandha may inhibit the formation of beta-amyloid plaques. Additionally, primary research suggests that ashwagandha may benefit the brain by reducing oxidative stress, a factor that may contribute to the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease, the review said.

★ Asiaticoside Powder: In alternative medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Asiaticoside has long been used to boost mental clarity. Animal studies indicate that the herb may also help the brain by knocking out oxidative stress. For example, in a preliminary study in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology and Physiology in 2003, tests on rats showed that Asiaticoside inhibited Alzheimer's disease-related oxidative stress and improved cognitive function.

Natural Herbal Extracts for Improving Neurodegenerative Diseases

★ Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract: Melissa Officinalis is often taken in tea form and often used to relieve anxiety and insomnia, it may help improve cognitive function. For a 2003 study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry, 42 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease were given either a placebo or Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract for 4 months. At the end of the study, those given Melissa Officinalis showed substantial improvements in cognitive function (compared to those given a placebo).

★ Turmeric Extract Powder: Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (both factors that may benefit brain health and overall health). According to a review in 2010, preliminary research indicates that turmeric may promote brain health and prevent Alzheimer's disease by clearing beta-amyloid, a protein fragment, from the brain. The accumulation of beta-amyloid is known to form brain plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, turmeric may protect brain health by blocking the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain.
