Ceramide is a faint yellow extract from rice bran. Rice Bran Ceramide contains a large number of glycosphingolipids, which are potent antigens and immunogens. Glycosphingolipids have been classified as cell surface antigens that serve as binding sites for bacterial toxins and bacterial infections.
Ceramide is contained in the skin and plays an important role in maintaining the skin's barrier function and homeostasis. Ceramides have been found to be reduced in atopic dermatitis, dry skin, and the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) in the elderly. Therefore, a lack of ceramides is believed to be the cause of wrinkles and dry skin.
