How Much Do You Know about Pterostilbene?

Pterostilbene powder is a healthy dietary compound found in antioxidant-rich foods such as blueberries, cranberries, bilberries, huckleberries and grapes. It has been shown to prevent many cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic and blood diseases in human and animal studies. For instance, pterostilbene supplement benefits include protection against memory loss, high cholesterol, high blood pressure levels and certain types of cancer.

Who is Better? Pterostilbene? Or Resveratrol?

Pterostilbene has a similar structure to the antioxidant resveratrol as a methylated stilbene molecule. Pterostilbene and resveratrol share similar chemical, physiological and pharmacological properties but there is a small but crucial structural difference: pterostilbene has only one hydroxyl group compared to the three hydroxyl groups of resveratrol. Hydroxyl facilitates the body's metabolism. Fewer hydroxyl groups make it more difficult for the body to get rid of the molecule, which isn't a bad thing when the molecule is good. In short, pterostilbene outperformed resveratrol in membrane permeability and metabolic stability.

How Much Should You Take Pterostilbene?

The recommended dose of pterostilbene is decided by body weight and the reason for using it.

It seems that even low doses of pterostilbene supplements (extracts, powders, etc.) are beneficial in fighting oxidative stress and disease. In most human studies, pterostilbene doses of about 200-700 mg or less are usually taken. Even as little as 10 mg may provide some benefits, but more than 200 mg seems to work best.

Unless your doctor recommends a different dose of pterostilbene, it is recommended that you take the following doses according to your weight:

If you are under or about 150 pounds, consume 215-430 mg per day.

If you weigh about 200 pounds, consume 290-580 mg per day.

If you weigh more than 250 pounds, consume 365-730 mg per day. Do not take more than this amount without first consulting your doctor.
