What is NMN?

NMN, in short, is a naturally occurring molecule that provides your body with energy. NMN is a molecule called a nucleotide. Nucleotides play multiple roles in the human body. Inside the cells, NMN is converted to another molecule called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). The human body needs NAD to perform various functions involved in energy production and metabolism. We can think of NMN as the raw material and NAD as the advanced version the human body can actually use. The amount of NAD the human body can produce depends upon the amount of NMN available in the body.

Why Should I Take NMN Supplement?

In view of the amazing health benefits of NMN, some experts think that taking NMN supplements can help reverse the effects of aging. Research in animal models, especially mice, suggests that NMN supplementation may provide several benefits, including reversing aging and ameliorating cognitive health. But do NMN supplements really work in humans? Let's find out together by understanding the research data below.

1. One study examined the effects of taking 250 milligrams (mg) of NMN supplement daily for 10 weeks in postmenopausal women with prediabetes and who were overweight or obese. Those who took NMN supplements had increased insulin sensitivity and signaling.

2. Another recent study looked at the effects of NMN supplementation in amateur runners during athletic training. For the study, 48 runners aged 27 to 50 took either 300, 600, or 1,200 mg of oral NMN supplements or a placebo per day for 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks, those who took NMN supplements in addition to regular exercise training had improved aerobic capacity compared with those who received a placebo, and the increase was greater at higher doses.

3. Another recent study looked at the effects of taking NMN supplements on sleep quality in Japanese adults aged 65 or older. Participants in this study took 250 mg of NMN supplement or a placebo over 12 weeks. While taking NMN supplements did not seem to improve sleep quality, the researchers did find improvements in overall sleepiness and muscle reactivity in those who took NMN supplements in the afternoon, compared to the placebo group or those who took NMN in the morning.

Can NMN Slow Down Aging?

NMN and NAD levels naturally decline with age, leading many researchers to suggest that taking NMN supplements may help address age-related health issues. A study of 10 Japanese men found that taking NMN supplements (100, 250, or 500 mg) increased blood levels of NMN byproducts, including NAD. Insulin resistance develops with age and is one of the reasons diabetes is more common in older adults. While research has not specifically examined the effects of taking NMN supplements, available research suggests that it may help you maintain or restore insulin sensitivity as the age. Taking NMN supplements has also been shown to reduce sleepiness and improve muscle reactivity in older adults, which may improve physical and mental health as we age.

Is NMN Safe? How Much Should I Take?

NMN supplement is an ideal choice for increasing cellular levels of NAD because it is well tolerated and has few side effects observed in both human and animal studies. Studies in humans have shown that it is safe in doses up to 1,200 mg per day. Studies have found health benefits in doses as low as 250 mg per day of NMN and as high as 1,200 mg per day. In the study involving amateur runners mentioned above, the aerobic benefits of NMN supplementation were greater at high doses (1,200 mg) compared to low doses (300 mg). However, no difference in benefit was observed at the high dose compared with the moderate dose (600 mg).
