Why is DHA Essential to Human Body?

What is Vegan DHA?

Our Vegan DHA is derived from algae, not fish or krill. Although research on algae oil supplements is limited, studies suggest that its bioavailability and health benefits are comparable to fish- or krill-based sources of DHA. DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid vital for brain development during pregnancy and early childhood. It has also boosted heart health, improved vision, and reduced inflammatory responses. This long-chain fatty acid is present in cell membranes all over the body and helps transmit messages between nerves. DHA is naturally produced by our bodies in small amounts, however, to achieve adequate amounts, DHA needs to be consumed through dietary sources or supplements.

Importance of DHA for Human Body

Why is DHA Essential to Human Body?

DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) is a vital structural component of the skin and retina of the eye. Fortifying infant formula with DHA may improve vision in infants. DHA is essential for brain development and function in children and brain function in adults. DHA deficiency in early life is closely linked to later problems such as aggressive hostility, ADHD, and learning disabilities. Decreased DHA in later life has also been associated with impaired brain function and the onset of Alzheimer's disease. DHA may have a positive effect on certain diseases such as arthritis, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. More importantly, it may promote heart health by reducing the number of triglycerides and possibly LDL (bad) cholesterol particles in the blood.

How Much DHA Should I Take?

Recommendations vary by country and organization, ranging from 100 mg/day at the low end to 300 mg/day at the high end. According to studies linking DHA to all health benefits, a panel of experts from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends a daily intake of 650 mg of EPA and DHA, at least one-third of that amount (about 215 mg/day) from DHA. Theoretically, the conversion rate of ALA to DHA is 2% to 5%, which means that vegans and vegetarians would need to consume 4.3 to 10.8 grams of ALA per day to produce 215 mg/day of DHA, depending upon which conversion spectrum they belong to.

How long does it take for DHA supplements to Start Working in the Body?

Although blood levels of DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids may rise rapidly when you take DHA supplements, you may not see immediate results. Results also depend upon which symptoms or diseases you wish to relieve with DHA supplements. You may see changes in mood or pain between six weeks and six months after starting taking DHA supplements.
