Is Herbal Extracts Favourable For Skin From UV Damage?

Apr 22, 2022

With the upcoming summer and high temperature, for consumers, especially female consumers, protection of skin from UV damage has undoubtedly become the focus of their most attention. According to the 2020 China Beauty Nutrition White Paper, the skin problems that female respondents concerned about are skin pigmentation, dark complexion, dry skin, dehydrated skin, wrinkles/sagging, pore roughness, acne, oily skin, and sensitive and reddened skin. Almost all of these skin problems are related to excessive UV exposure.

Research has shown that the main damaging factor of the skin is oxygen-containing molecules, commonly referred to as "free radicals". To stimulate the skin to repair and build itself naturally, we need a lot of active ingredients such as 95% Proanthocyanidins Powder, Water Soluble Resveratrol 10%, Quercetin 98% Extract Powder, Beta Carotene 10% Powder and so on. The "antioxidant capacity" of a food is a reflection of its ability to protect the body from the action of free radicals and prevent degenerative diseases caused by persistent oxidative stress.

UV Rays Penetrate Skin

According to the different wavelength, sunlight can be divided into three parts: visible, ultraviolet and infrared light. Ultraviolet light can be divided into three kinds: long wave (UVA), medium wave (UVB) and short wave (UVC). Among them, the main damage to the skin is from UVB and UVA. These two types of ultraviolet rays will cause a large number of epidermal cells to die, which resulting in a series of skin problems such as rough skin surface, increased keratin, skin aging, wrinkles, sunburn, and etc.

In addition, ultraviolet rays also cause keratinocytes to release a variety of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins, histamine, serotonin, and kinin, which in turn promote the synthesis of melanin by melanocytes, leading to the deposition of various pigmented spots and dull skin.

Skin Care-Herbal Extracts

Let's take a close look at the super functional benefits of certain herbal extracts as below:

★ Proanthocyanidin (OPC) is used as a DNA mutation inhibitor. Additionally, OPC blocks elastase, maintains the integrity of elastin in the skin, and works synergistically with vitamins C and E to protect and replenish them.

★ Resveratrol was found to be an antioxidant and anti-mutagenic agent; it mediates anti-inflammatory effects and induces differentiation of human promyelocytic leukemia cells. Furthermore, it inhibited the development of preneoplastic lesions in carcinogen-treated mouse mammary glands in culture and inhibited tumorigenesis in a mouse skin cancer model.

★ Quercetin has been tested as a potent topical sunscreen factor in humans and found to provide protection in the UVA and UVB ranges.

★ One clinical study reported important improvements in skin thickness, density, roughness, and scaling after 12 weeks of oral supplementation with lycopene, lutein, beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, and selenium.
