What is shikimic acid extract?
Shikimic Acid Powder is derived from star anise. It is a white crystalline powder. The most common specification of this powder is 98%, detected via HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography). Higher purities like 99%, 99.5%, and 99.9% are also available for more specialised applications. Shikimic acid extract is the key raw material for Oseltamivir. The main health benefits of this extract are its antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. It is often used in dietary supplements to support immune system function. Besides, it can soothe irritated skin and help with conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Our shikimic acid extract is refined using advanced bio-enzymatic hydrolysis and purification technology, maintaining a purity consistently above 98%. It exhibits excellent water solubility and maintains good solubility and stability in various formulations. Our ISO 22000 and other quality management system certifications ensure full traceability from raw materials to finished products and meet the regulatory requirements of different global markets (such as Europe and North America). We can tailor and optimise the formulation and specifications of our shikimic acid extract based on specific application scenarios, such as pharmaceutical intermediates and raw materials for health supplements, to meet the unique requirements of different markets. We have an annual production capacity of 4,000 tons and process 600 kg of raw materials daily. This robust production capability ensures a reliable supply chain and guarantees stable, timely product delivery for our customers.

How can we get shikimic acid extract?
We employ a combined enzymatic hydrolysis and yeast fermentation extraction method to obtain shikimic acid. Only water-based solvents are used throughout the process; no organic reagents are employed. The resulting shikimic acid is of high purity, with a content greater than 99%, and the powder is pure white, without bitterness, solvent residue, or pesticide residue. The specific extraction process is as follows:
1. Pretreatment and Enzymatic Hydrolysis: Star anise is pulverised with water and then hydrolysed for 1-3 hours at 45-60℃ with 0.1%-0.5% by weight of a biological enzyme (such as pectinase or cellulase).
2. Organic Membrane Filtration: The hydrolysate is filtered in two stages using organic membranes with molecular weight cutoffs of 8000 and 800, respectively, and pressures of 0.45-0.5 MPa and 1.8-2.0 MPa.
3. Yeast Fermentation: The filtrate is aerobically fermented at 30-35℃ at a star anise to yeast mass ratio of 1:0.001 to 1:0.015 for 36-48 hours.
4. Concentration: The fermented filtrate is concentrated to a solids content greater than 50% (Brix), and the pH of the concentrate is adjusted to 1.0-1.5.
5. Crystallisation: The concentrate is crystallised at a low temperature of 4-10℃ for more than 4 hours to precipitate shikimic acid.
6. Drying: Finally, the crystallised material is dried using spray drying to obtain the shikimic acid extract.

shikimic acid applications
Shikimic Acid Powder is a versatile ingredient with significant applications across several industries.
Pharmaceutical Applications
Antiviral Agent: The pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on shikimic acid as a critical starting material for the industrial synthesis of the antiviral drug Oseltamivir. This application is crucial for treating and preventing various strains of the influenza virus.
Cosmetic and Skincare Uses
In cosmetics, shikimic acid is valued for many skin benefits. A clinical study on formulations containing 3% shikimic acid found it effective in improving skin microrelief and promoting exfoliation. Its official functions as a cosmetic ingredient include:
a. Anti-Seborrheic: Helps control excess sebum production, benefiting those with oily skin or seborrheic dermatitis.
b. Skin Conditioning: Helps maintain skin softness, smoothness, and hydration.
c. Exfoliation: Promotes desquamation (shedding of the outer skin layers), leading to a more flexible and compact skin surface.
Dietary Supplement and Functional Food Role
Shikimic acid is a nutraceutical ingredient in forms like capsules and tablets. The reported benefits include:
a. Antioxidant Effect: It helps neutralise free radicals, protecting cells from oxidative damage.
b. Anti-inflammatory Properties: It can help alleviate inflammatory reactions and related symptoms.
c. Immune Function Support: It may enhance the activity of immune cells, such as natural killer cells and regulatory T-cells, which improves the body's defence against infections.
Agricultural Applications
In agriculture, shikimic acid finds application as a biological regulator. It can:
a. Promote Plant Growth: Enhance the development and yield of crops.
b. Enhance Disease Resistance: Strengthen plants' natural defences against diseases.

FAQ
Q1: Is shikimic acid extract natural?
A: Yes, shikimic acid extract is a naturally occurring compound found in specific plants. However, the powdered supplement form you purchase is a concentrated extract derived from these natural sources.
Q2: Is shikimic acid safe to consume?
A: Generally, it is considered safe for most people when consumed in typical supplement doses. However, you should consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement.
Q3: What are the potential side effects of shikimic acid?
A: Side effects are generally mild and uncommon but may include: gastrointestinal discomfort (e.g., nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach) and skin rashes (in rare cases of sensitivity). If you experience any adverse effects, you should discontinue use.
Q4: How do I take shikimic acid extract?
A: The extract powder is usually mixed into water, juice, or a smoothie.
Q5: What should I look for when buying shikimic acid extract?
A: Purity: Look for a high purity percentage (e.g., 98%+). Source: Check if it's derived from star anise or produced via fermentation. Third-Party Testing: Choose a brand that provides a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent lab to verify purity and the absence of heavy metals and contaminants. Reputable Supplier: Buy from well-known health supplement retailers or directly from trusted brands.
Q6: How should I store shikimic acid extract?
A: Store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keeping it in its original airtight container is ideal.
Q7: How does shikimic acid compare to other popular skincare acids like glycolic or salicylic acid?
A: Shikimic acid is generally considered gentler. It doesn't penetrate as deeply or as quickly as glycolic acid (a small AHA) or salicylic acid (a BHA).
