We all know that saw palmetto berries (Serenoa repens) are native to Florida and saw palmetto oil can be extracted when the berries are ripe. Standardized saw palmetto berry extract powder supports prostate health at the right dose and helps relieve symptoms associated with BPH, including urinary problems, and promotes better nighttime sleep.

However, effective July 17, 2018, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) adopted new rules for harvesting and marketing saw palmetto berries. Landowners harvesting saw palmetto berries or contract harvesters working on public or private land must obtain a native plant harvest permit from the Department of Plant Industries. According to the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the price of berries for pickers tripled in 2018 compared to 2017 and will continue to rise.

What should we do? We must find a more economical and stable supply of raw materials for production.

After the efforts of the purchasing department, we finally identified the local raw material supplier. Of course, after the cooperation, we still have a lot of work to do in quality control, such as requesting a variety of identification reports, component testing, physical data, and chemical data, all of which are in line with the UPS41 standard.

Saw palmetto products and quality analysis

1. Saw palmetto berry extract powder

Serenoa repens berry extract is a powder made directly from dried ripe fruit, brown in appearance, and characteristic odor, containing NLT 2% volatile oils, NLT 7% lipophilic extract, and NLT 9% total fatty acids determined on the dried basis.

2. Saw palmetto oil

The oil is obtained from crushed saw palmetto fruit by extraction with a water-alcohol mixture or solvent hexane or by supercritical extraction with carbon dioxide. The ratio of starting crude plant material to extract is 8.0:1 to 14.3:1. This saw palmetto berry extract contains NLT 80.0% fatty acids, NLT 0.2% sterols, and NLT 0.1% beta-sitosterol, all on an anhydrous basis. The lipophilic extract contains NLT 0.15% and NMT 0.35% long-chain alcohol.

Oil is rich in a variety of fatty acids and volatile oils, mainly oleic acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, caproic acid, caprylic acid, capric acid, stearic acid, linolenic acid, palmitoleic acid, etc. And there is a special proportional relationship between these fatty acids.

3. Saw palmetto extract powder

Why made the extract powder?

Saw palmetto oil contains a lot of unsaturated fatty acids. After long-term storage, the unsaturated fatty acids are easily oxidized, and the oil will become sour. The extract powder is not easily oxidized and has excellent fluidity and water dispersibility.

Our saw palmetto berry extract powder adopts a microencapsulation powder process, using medicinal excipients, drinking water, and oil in a specific proportion, then high-speed mixing and shearing into a viscous, uniformly dispersed liquid, sprayed into a fine powder. Finally, Finally, a powder with a higher total fatty acid content is obtained, and more than 90% of the oil molecules are encapsulated by the auxiliary materials.
