Can Herbal Extracts Modulate Insomnia?

May 07, 2022

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that affects up to 30% of adults worldwide. It is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying awake all night, and sleeping as long as you want in the morning. On the basis of the current global population, as many as 237 million people are affected. People with insomnia are 20 times more likely to suffer from panic attacks. Sleep-deprived adults are more likely to develop chronic diseases such as stroke, asthma and cancer.

Herbal medicine, that is, the application of plants or plant-derived substances for therapeutic purposes, has been employed for centuries to treat a series of sleep disorders. Famous examples

include Ashwagandha Root Extract Powder, St. John's Wort Extract Powder, GABA Pure Powder, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract and Chamomile Extract. Currently available evidence shows that herbal extracts may have some hypnotic and anxiolytic effects by interacting with GABA receptors and regulating GABAergic signaling in the brain.

What Causes Insomnia

Let us introduce some herbal extracts as sleep aid as below:

Ashwagandha Root Extract Powder

Ashwagandha root extract, a natural compound with sleep-inducing and sedative properties, has shown convincing sleep-improving and anxiety-regulating effects in improving healthy people and in subjects diagnosed with insomnia.

According to a 2019 study by Cureus, insomniacs who took 300 mg of ashwagandha extract twice daily experienced similar benefits in terms of sleep onset and sleep quality, and reduced anxiety.

St. John's Wort Extract Powder

Many clinical trials have shown that taking St. John's wort extract can improve mood and reduce anxiety and insomnia associated with depression. St. John's wort may stimulate GABA receptors, a crucial channel for sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain.

Al-Akoum et al. indicated that 900 mg of St. John's wort reduced scores on the sleep problems in perimenopausal women compared with placebo after 12 weeks of oral administration.

GABA Pure Powder

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the main neurotransmitter in the human central nervous system. GABA pure powder can increase the activity of hexokinase in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), thereby speeding up the metabolism of glucose in the brain, finally increasing the blood supply and oxygen supply to the brain, and promoting sleep. Sleep studies have shown that people with insomnia have 30% lower levels of GABA than those who get enough sleep. Researches have shown that GABA has many sleep-improving effects, including helping people fall asleep faster and sleep longer after taking 100 mg of GABA at bedtime.
